28 October 2001 - VHT-DK Warning: New 'Harrier A linkvirus' Found
Virus Help Demark says a new virus is found. As far as we know, it has
not been spread in the wild. This new virus, named "Harrier A" was able
to disable the antivirus programs, but with the new xvs.library v33.36,
this in no longer possible, due to the new security stuff in the
xvs.library code.

For those people who would like to read the .htm doc from the workbench,
there is a Workbench Project icon, with the default tool of SimpleHTML.
The archive that containes SafeDoc icons is called SafeDocs-Extras10.lha
SimpleHTML, which is programmed by Sebastian Bauer, allows you to view
HTML files offline. It supports small subset of the HTML tags, but quite
useable with any docs I have used it with. An html.datatype which is
required to view any pics, is available on Sebastian Bauer's SimpleHTML
Site. Sebastian's viewer also requires AmigaOS 3.x, due to the use of
the datatype to view any pics.

25 October 2001 - New Xvs.library v33.36 Released
Georg Hörmann, the original author of the XvsLibrary has come back on
board with his excellent antivirus External Virus Scanner Library. Georg
and Jan Erik Olausen (JEO) are currently developing xvs.library together,
but this update was done by Georg alone. In the future, Jan Erik and
Georg will keep the library up-to-date together.
25 October 2001 - Amiga.org Status Updates
Wayne Hunt reports that "Due to circumstances beyond our control,
Amiga.org is temporarily unavailable. On this temporary page, we will
place status updates for the reconstruction of the site." Wayne said
there is apparently some confusion out there as to why they are asking
for donations to reconstruct Amiga.org... All these questions were
previously answered on the former Project XTR page, so he placed it
back online. Keep in mind that Project XTR was started before the
problems of October 20th, but is now more important than ever.

25 October 2001 - VHT-Denmark Amiga Anti-virus Programmer Poll Open
Virus Help Denmark announced a new poll on Oct 20, 2001. This poll is
is to vote for the Amiga antivirus programmer that has done the most for
the Amiga scene in 2001. The poll will run to the 31 of December 2001,
and you can only vote once a day

18 October 2001 - Fundraising Project XTR Pages Now Online
Amiga.Org reports that "Project XTR is an attempt at raising funds to
provide a new, higher capacity dedicated server for Amiga.org. The goal
of this campaign is to purchase a new Cobalt model XTR server to either
host, or provide load balancing for the current system." Amiga.org is
currently taking contributors by any method possible, and if everyone
gives a little, then we all gain a lot. :)
14 October 2001 - VirusExecutor v2.22 Released
Jan Erik Olausen released a new version of his virus killer. The archive
is named VirusExecutor222.lha, and can be found on the downloads page, by
following the above link. For changes since last version, see the readme
file. JEO says "There will soon be a Bobek 3 virus out, so be at alert...
If the Bobek 3 also hides in a Installer script, VirusExecutor will say
so..."

11 October 2001 - VHT-DK Warning: New Installer Of Bobek2 Found
Virus Help Demark says the trojan will install the known 'Bobek 2'
linkvirus. It has been on Aminet for about 4 month, but is has been
removed now. So if you have installed the archive CoolBall.lha, it is
a very good idea to check your system with an updated antivirus program
and also the newest update of the 'xvs.library'.

10 October 2001 - Safe v17.3 Released
Zbigniew `Zeeball` Trzcionkowski released his latest freeware virus

on the downloads page, by following the above link. Zeeball says "..new
Safe contains informaton about the (CoolBall.lha) archive, but seems all
the people who has to be infected probably already are :-("

There has been discovered new installer of old BOBEK2 linkvirus! It has
been on Aminet for quite long time, and as I heard it even reached Exec
cover CD. The archive containing the dropper of this virus is called:
Name: CoolBall.lha
By: Patrz Podnogi (accoriding to funny readme in very poor english)
File: Ball/Install - installs BOBEK2 linkvirus in memory
This archive is said to be cool backdrop for WB, but the included
installer is mixed with dropper of BOBEK2. Same technique has already
been used with Bastard linkvirus.
Please check your systems with recent AV software as this virus is quite
buggy at all! The installer script recognition will be included
in next xvs.library release.

02 October 2001 - ReqTools Library v39.2 by AROS Team Available
The Reqtools.library is needed by a few anti-virus programs, and is
available at VHT-Canada. This in the updated version done by the AROS
Team. The archive contains only the library! For all the other stuff
like prefs program, catalogs you still have to download ReqToolsUser
unless you have it already!

25 October 2001 - Bravenet Offline Fri October 26th For Server Move
An important update from Bravenet Services was received Oct 23rd, in
which they said moving the server network requires some downtime while
the servers and hardware are dismantled, moved, and then re-assembled in
the new facility. During this time, all Bravenet services will be offline
and temporarily unavailable.

18 October 2001 - An Outbreak of Anthrax on the Internet?
Is this just the beginning? Kaspersky Labs reports that two new Internet
worms are making the rounds, trying to spread under the guise of important
information about the anthrax virus.
18 October 2001 - WebMoney Users Once Again in a "High-Risk" Group
The latest Trojan program goes after WebMoney purses. Kaspersky Labs,
announces the detection of the new Trojan, KWM, which allows malefactors
imperceptibly to control infected computers and gain access to the
personal payment accounts of WebMoney users.
18 October 2001 - October 16: The Apocalypse is Postponed
SirCams destructive function is not triggered on October 16, which is
just like any other day. According to announcements made by a number of
media sources, on October 16, a new wave of incidences connected with the
widespread, destructive, malicious Internet worm SirCam was supposed to
splash across the world. Kaspersky Labs moved to refute these claims
(posted by KLabs on Oct 15), and announce that, according to what
currently is known, modifications of the SirCam virus contain a bug,
which results in the worm not being capable of destroying any data on
this date.
18 October 2001 - Hacking Billy the Big Mouth Bass
LWN.net Daily news says for those who have not had the pleasure...Billy
the Big Mouth Bass is an obnoxious toy in the form of a singing, moving
fish. One of those things children use to drive parents nuts. Now there
is a site dedicated to hacking Billy with Linux out there - worth a look.
Billy can be made to say anything you might want. There is source
available, of course...
11 October 2001 - Compaq Recalls Power Adapters
The Globe And Mail Tech News reports that Compaq Computer Corp. is
recalling 1.4 million power adapters used with some ofits laptop
computers after receiving five reports that the adapters caught fire.
No injuries were reported.

05 October 2001 - Americans Want Uncryption
The Register reports that three in four Americans favour tough anti-
encryption laws, in the wake of the Sept 11th terrorist atrocities, a
survey finds. Cryptography presents a challenge to the legitimate
interests of government in investigating terrorists and criminals. But
the prohibition of strong crypto, would affect lawful businesses and
individuals, while doing nothing to restrain evildoers. To paraphrase
Phil Zimmermann, the creator of the popular PGP email encryption package,
only criminals will have access to encryption if the technology is
criminalised.

04 October 2001 - FBI Names 20 Most-wanted Security Flaws
ZDNet says the SANS Institute, in cooperation with the FBI, has unveiled
a list of the most critical software problems - and both Windows and Unix
are on the list.
04 October 2001 - F-Secure Reports: Cancer Chain Letter HOAX
ALIAS: Save Little Girl chain letter
F-Secure says this is a widespread chain letter, which asks people to
send e-mail messages to benefit a cancer patient. There are several
different versions of this chain letter, some of them mention specific
patients. These messages are hoaxes and they are not endorsed by any
cancer organisation. Do not pass them on. For more information, check
