integrity of this forum, and uphold the reputation of the Amiga in
general, this forum will be closing indefinately from 12:00am
December 1st 2000. It is with sadness that I tell you this, but I
feel that the evidence speeks for itself. The AmigaONE forum was
set-up to deal with AmigaONE discussions, not this slanderous talk

    31 December 2000 - New Year's DDOS Advisory
National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC) Advisory says
Based on FBI investigations and other information, the NIPC advises
taking some extra precautions in computer security over the holiday
period to reduce the possibility of, or damage from, Distributed
Denial-of-Service (DDOS) and other cyber attacks which could occur.
The NIPC suggests that double checking your network's firewall
configuration, is one method of preventing or reducing the effects
   of a DDOS attack.

26 December 2000 - The End of SSL and SSH?
Hacker Whacker has a Dec 18th Security Portal article on their webpage.
Kurt Seifried, for SecurityPortal, says in part, "Yesterday, dsniff 2.3
was released. Why is this important, you ask? dsniff 2.3 allows you to
exploit several fundamental flaws in two extremely popular encryption
protocols, SSL and SSH. SSL and SSH are used to protect a large amount
of network traffic, from financial transactions with online banks and
stock trading sites to network administrator access to secured hosts
   holding extremely sensitive data."

26 December 2000 - DShield: Port 137 Hottest Scanned Port Of The Day
DShield.org report from Dec 23rd, 2000, says the Domain Name Server
(DNS - translating service that changes an IP 4-digit address into
acutal names), service usually uses port 53 to communicate. So how is
all this related to port 137? Windows uses it's own system to translate
IP addresses into Windows names. These windows names are usually used
to identify PCs participating in windows file sharing. However, Windows
will attempt to obtain the "windows name" of every other computer it
connects to. If you see simultanous access to port 139, you should be
alarmed. In this case, someone may actually try to connect to your PC
   and access its shared resources.

about a user's browsing habits and software installed on the user's
machine. These unsubstantiated claims have since been withdrawn. CAI
tested this software in their anti-virus lab and found that the software
does not send any personal information unless a user voluntarily fills
in a survey form. Therefore, only those details approved by the user
will be submitted. Radiate has published on their web-site, a detailed
"Privacy Policy" regarding what the software does and doesn't do. Any
customers who have concerns about what this software does should visit

Stiller Research virus hoax news reports that unlike many of the
virus hoaxes, this hoax may have been started by a misguided but
well-meaning individual. This individual was probably deceived by
a number of hoaxes but also perhaps encountered a real virus,

   system.

17 December 2000 - DShield: Hottest Scanned Port Of The Day
DShield.org report from Dec 16th, 2000, says in part, "One of the
'hot ports' over the last couple of days is 111. I assume that these
scans go for the rpc.statd vulnerability, which was covered by CERT
in August. If you run linux, please make sure you got your system

17 December 2000 - Remote Computer Network Security Scan
This is just a reminder that HACKER WHACKER has some excellent services
that people can make use of. As their Webpage Title suggests, they
preform many services, such as scanning your computer for certain
things. Among the scan services are a free security scan, finding out
how secure you are, find out if hackers targetting you, or testing your
firewall. HACKER WHACKER states that by pressing Scan you agree to
their Terms and Conditions. In order to prevent people from scanning a
machine that is not their own, they require a valid E-Mail address, to
which they will immediately mail a Passcode which will be required to
perform the scan. Note: E-Mail accounts from "Web" E-Mail services
like Hotmail or Yahoo, are NOT accepted as E-Mail addresses. You must
use the Email address your Internet Provider gave you.

The National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC), released
Assessment 00-062 stating a regional entity in the electric power
industry has recently experienced computer intrusions through the
Anonymous FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Login exploitation. The
intruders used the hacked FTP site to store and play interactive
games that consumed 95 percent of the organization's Internet
bandwidth. The Anonymous FTP, where the FTP server allows global
user access without requiring a specific name and password, is
often used by hackers as a means to exploit other vulnerabilities.
System Administrators are advised to check their networks for FTP
access, especially for illicit FTP servers that can provide a
   back-door into the LAN (Local-Area-Network).

    27 July 2000 - Hubby Made Supper :)
Talk about a great news bleep, eh? I was very busy doing
my things here, so I guess he thought he would not get any
nourishment, unless he tackled the hot kitchen and made
something. Nice to eat his cooking for a change. Nicer
yet, not to have to enter the heat in there. ;)

    27 July 2000 - Submitted VHT-NL - Canada to Campaigns
Today, submittals were put in, and requests were made,
to have the Canadian site of Virus Help Team - Netherlands
listed in a number of campaigns. These being:
   a) Viewable With Any Broswer campaign - They carry a list
of actual sites that are taking part in the campaign,
and I thought it would be nice if we were listed too.
   b) Made On Amiga - The request was made to be listed under
Organizations > Other. They must first checkout this
site, and then if it pasts their scrutiny, it will be
      added to the MoA list.
   c) Authored On Amiga - Request has to be done by e-mail,
where I asked to be listed in the Misc/Other Section.
This site is quite old, and was not updated since 1998,
so says the homepage, but maybe this site will get into
      the New Sites section.
   d) Amiga Web Ring - Did all the submissions, and placed the
webring ID on the entry pages, here at VHT-NL. It may
be a while for the web ring to operate, since the owner
of the webring, who will be adding us to the ring, is
away on holidays till after Aug 18th.
   e) Built With Amiga Software - Did not need any further
intervention, than to have the icon and link on VHT-NL.

25 July 2000 - Defunct Web Site Leaks Credit
Card Info. SANS Institute Online has an article entitled
Failed Company's Web Site Reveals Information From Porn,

    19 July 2000 - VHT-UK Mirror Link Added
Now there is a mirror of the Virus Help Team - Netherlands
You can find this mirror link on the About Us page, under
Charlene, VHT-NL UK Mirror maintainer. The UK Mirror site,
is exactly that -- an exact 'mirror' of the site. Now that
this mirror is available on a different server than UKOnline,
it can now be accessed with the Amiga text browser program,
ALynx 1.31. Presently ALynx coughs on the UKOnline server,
and continuosly receives error messages, saying the file(s)
is not there. Strange, because when a file is really not
there, the error message that comes up says "We are sorry
that this Website is currently unavailable." Go figure. :)

    17 July 2000 VHT-NL Canadian Browser-Friendly Site
Updated. We now have seperate sections on the news and viri
warnings pages, in order to keep Amiga, PC, Mac and General
   in their own section.

We have also added a java-free web chat room. This may be
of benefit to those members whom belong to the viruschecker2
mailing list, to keep in contact and to chit-chat. We are
aware that not all people have a seperate IRC program to
use. Make plans to meet each other and chat, while sipping
on your hot cup of tea.

You may notice also that there is now a link on each page to
our PGP Security section. The newest addition besides the
live chat, is our Search Page. This service is quite good,
and can search VHT-NL site, or you can also put in a query
   and search the web.

12 July 2000 FBI e-mail Snooping Device called Carnivore
Civil liberties and privacy groups are railing against a new
system designed to allow law enforcement agents to intercept
and analyze huge amounts of e-mail in connection with an
investigation. Now the FBI has it in use. Encrypted e-mail,
done with an e-mail encoding program like PGP, still stays in
code on Carnivore, and it's up to agents to decode it.

keyfiles we have available are on the PGP Security page.

Australia. A reporter with ZDNet Australia News, says

06 June 2000 - Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) Section Added.
Since files will have PGP digital signatures, I thought

are in the process now of making digital signatures and
MD5SUM checksums for all downloadable files.

03 June 2000 - Fixing links for pictures because some
of them were not showing up on my husbands Internet Explorer
